Günter Heidel

Günter Heidel (born June 11, 1942 in Leisnig, Saxony ; † November 15, 2013 in Dresden ) was a German doctor and medical historian .

Live and act

Heidel graduated from the Workers' and Farmers Faculty in Halle (Saale) in 1960 and then studied medicine in Sofia and Dresden , where he received his doctorate in 1966 . He was an assistant doctor at the Institute for Forensic Medicine and at the Institute for Social Medicine of the Medical Academy Dresden as well as department head in the organization and computing center of this university. From 1975 to 1979 Heidel worked in the health policy department in the Central Committee of the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) in Berlin. On September 1, 1979, senior physician Günter Heidel took over the management of the department for the history of medicine at the Medical Academy "Carl Gustav Carus" in Dresden. This academy became an independent department at the same time. Heidel completed his habilitation in 1980 with a thesis on the clinician Johann Ludwig Choulant . In 1981 Heidel was appointed as a university lecturer, then as associate professor and finally as full professor at the newly established chair for the history of medicine at the “Carl Gustav Carus” Medical Academy in Dresden. He held this chair until 1992. Heidel was instrumental in initiating the publication of the publications of the Medical Academy Dresden. From 1992 to 2004 Heidel worked as a general practitioner in Dresden-Schönfeld.
