Günter König (politician)

Günter König (born July 12, 1933 in Berlin-Kreuzberg ; † September 5, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ). From 1989 to 1992 he was the district mayor of Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Life

König grew up in a politically left-wing family. During the Second World War and the air raids on Berlin (1943 to 1945) he was evacuated to the Spreewald with his brother and mother . He experienced the liberation of Berlin by the Red Army in April 1945 in Berlin.

After attending the Robert Koch School in Berlin, he began his service as a civil servant candidate in the Kreuzberg district office in the 1950s. He became a member of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) in 1956 and the SPD in 1959. For several years he was the office manager of the then district mayor Willy Kressmann . In 1971 he was elected to the District Assembly (BVV) Kreuzberg. From 1975 to 1989 he was a member of the Kreuzberg district office and city councilor for youth and sport. In April 1989 he was elected district mayor of Kreuzberg. He held this post until October 1992.

König died at the age of 82 and was buried in the St. Thomas churchyard at Hermannstrasse 179–185 in Neukölln .

Honors

On February 19, 2019 , a memorial plaque was inaugurated on the Günter-König-Sportplatz, Berlin-Kreuzberg , Blücherstraße 46-47 .
