Franz Schulz (born August 1, 1948 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German politician from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and was district mayor of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg from 2006 to 2013 .

After his apprenticeship as a photolithographer and the conscientious objection , Schulz worked in the profession he had learned. Later he studied art at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt . In Frankfurt am Main , he did his Abitur in the second educational path at the evening high school for working people .

From 1975 Schulz studied physics in Konstanz , then in Berlin , where he obtained his doctorate in 1985 at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society on the subject of metal-electronic contribution to the differential capacitance of the metal-electrolyte boundary layer . In 1987 he founded a GmbH in the IT sector in Berlin-Schöneberg . He also worked in an environmental planning project, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing and in the Spandau Environment Agency .

Franz Schulz lives in Berlin and has a son.

Political career

Franz Schulz joined the Berlin Alternative List in 1990 , and from 1992 he was a member of the district assembly in Kreuzberg . There he was parliamentary group leader of the Alliance Greens from 1993 to 1995.

On March 15, 1996, Schulz was elected district mayor of Kreuzberg. He held this office until December 31, 2000, the day after the merger of the district with the Friedrichshain district to form the new Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district. From 2001 to 2006 he was district councilor for urban development and construction.

Since November 6, 2006, Franz Schulz has been district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and at the same time head of the urban development, human resources and equality department, and since December 7, 2011 of the finance, human resources and urban development department. In July 2011, the Berlin public prosecutor opened an investigation against Schulz for violating the Assembly Act . The occasion was his participation in the blockade of a pro-Germany election rally in the former Kreuzberg town hall .

On July 31, 2013, his office as district mayor automatically ended when he reached the age of 65, but could have been extended by the district assembly . According to his own statement, Franz Schulz was no longer available for election for health reasons, and was succeeded by Monika Herrmann (also Greens).
