Günter Schlierkamp (also Gunter Schlierkamp ) (born February 2, 1970 in Olfen ) is a German IFBB professional bodybuilder who has lived in the USA since 1996 .

Life

Youth and amateur career

Günter Schlierkamp began lifting weights at the age of 16 and, at the same time as his training as a mechanic, he was training in a gym for the first time with a body weight of 76 kg. At the age of 18, he entered the Newcomer Championship in Essen in autumn 1988 and took first place in the junior heavyweight division. In the same year Günter Schlierkamp won four further junior competitions (Grand Prix Tour in Westphalia) and came second at the International German Championship in Karlsruhe (tied with the first place). In 1990 Schlierkamp won the German Junior Championship in Frankfurt am Main in the spring(in the heavyweight class and as the winner of all classes); in the autumn he was junior world champion in a Spanish competition.

After a two-year break in competition, Günter Schlierkamp moved from the junior to the men's heavyweight class in 1992 and won the European Amateur Championships in this class in March. Two months later he was also German champion in Berlin . In November 1993, Günter Schlierkamp completed his amateur career by winning the World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships (IFBB) in Seoul (South Korea) in the over 90 kilogram class.

Profile career

In his first professional competitions, Schlierkamp initially received little attention; an exception was his participation in the Canada Pro Cup in Montreal in May 1995, where he finished second behind Ronnie Coleman . On September 20, 1996 Günter Schlierkamp married his partner Carmen Jourst; the following month he moved with her to New Jersey (USA).

In December 1996 he signed his first sponsorship deal with Universal Nutrition. This contract helped him to make ends meet in New Jersey. In July 1997, Schlierkamp decided to relocate to Los Angeles on the advice of Ed Connors, the owner of Gold's Gym Venice . In the same year he received an advertising contract from Joe Weider , the founder of the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness . In 1998 he reached the top ten at the Pro Invitational in San Francisco , CA (9th place), at the Canada Pro Cup in Toronto (6th place) and at the Night of the Champions in New York (10th place). As a result, he was invited to the election of Mr. Olympia , where he could not place himself. Since then, Schlierkamp has participated in the Arnold Classic (1999, 2000, 2004), the Ironman Pro Invitational (1999, 2000), the Grand Prix England (2001, 2003) and the Show of Strength Pro Championship (2002, 2003), where he always made it into the top 10 participants. In the election for the Mr. Olympia, the most important IFBB professional competition, Günter Schlierkamp took 5th place in 2002. In 2003, as a result of a staphylococcal infection , he lost almost 10 kg in two weeks, which meant that he was not in top form in the subsequent competitions in 2003 (5th place) and 2004 (6th place).

His competition weight at Mr. Olympia 2005 was 136 kg with a height of 1.85 m and there he improved to fourth place in the competition in Las Vegas , Nevada . Günter Schlierkamp married his girlfriend Kim Lyons on March 24, 2007. He was seen as the embodiment of "Duke Nukem" at the Games Convention in Leipzig 2008. Since 2011 his new sponsor is the German company Multipower. He works with trainer Charles Glass and nutritionist Chad Nicholls.

  • Günter Schlierkamp got his first film role in the comedy Bierfest at the side of the ex-bodybuilder and actor Ralf Möller .
  • In the movie Hulk , the figure of the Hulk from Industrial Light and Magic was generated entirely on the computer. Günter Schlierkamp's body served as a model for the physique.
  • He also played a kickboxer alongside Hector Echavarria in the 2009 MMA film Never Surrender .
  • In late 2011 he was seen in a small role in the movie Jack and Jill .
