Günter Seufert

Günter Seufert (* 1955 in Schweinfurt ) is a German journalist and sociologist .

Life

Seufert studied social pedagogy at the Würzburg University of Applied Sciences and worked for four years. From 1983 to 1988 he studied social sciences and German at the University of Bremen ( MA ). From 1991 to 1993 he was a scholarship holder at the Istanbul branch of the Orient-Institut Beirut of the German Oriental Society and was in Bremen in 1995 with the dissertation on Political Islam in Turkey supervised by Antje-Katrin Menk (Department of Linguistics and Literature) . Islamism as a symbolic representation of a modernizing Muslim society for Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1996 he was a post-doc researcher at the University of Lausanne . Afterwards he was a speaker and later academic director of the Orient Institute Istanbul (OIIST). From 2001 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2010 he worked as a freelance author and journalist for u. a. the Berliner Zeitung and Die Zeit in Istanbul . From 2004 to 2007 he was Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia .

Since 2010 he has been working as a scientist with a research focus on Turkey and Cyprus at the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP) in Berlin . There he belongs to the research group EU- External Relations.

Seufert is the author of several books on Turkey , published by the CH Beck publishing house , and of articles in specialist journals such as Internationale Politik (IP).
