Günther Haselier

Günther Haselier (born April 19, 1914 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † October 9, 1991 in Karlsruhe ) was a German teacher, historian and president of the state archives in Baden-Württemberg.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in 1932, the son of a master hairdresser joined the administration as a civil servant candidate in his hometown of Breisach . From 1933 to the beginning of 1939 he studied history, German and English in Bonn and Freiburg. With the examination for the teaching post at grammar schools and the simultaneous doctorate to Dr. Phil. He completed his training in Freiburg. His teachers at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg included Gerhard Ritter and Friedrich Maurer . In 1940/41 he put on his dissertation on the history of the saltpetre : The disputes between the Hauensteiners and their authorities. A contribution to the history of Upper Austria and the south-west German peasant class in the 18th century . Before the war he was hired as a trainee lawyer. After the war as a soldier, from 1939 to September 1946, he became a study assessor and from 1947 to 1951 he worked for the Baden Regional Directorate for Culture and Education in Karlsruhe. In 1951 he became a teacher in Karlsruhe. In 1954 he joined the General State Archives in Karlsruhe and in 1970 he was appointed its director. In 1973 he was appointed head of the main state archives in Stuttgart and on January 1, 1975, the first head of the newly founded state archives department of Baden-Württemberg. As such, at the end of 1978 he was given the title “President of the State Archives Directorate”, which was introduced at the time. On August 31, 1979, he retired from active service.

He was chairman of the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg . He received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Merit Medal of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
