With the Black-Reds of Borussia Fulda, Maaß gained his first experience in higher league football at the age of 20: he was already a member of the Fulda squad in the then second-class 2nd League South in 1960/61 . For the last three years before the new division into the single-track central Bundesliga and its substructure with five regional regional leagues from 1963/64, the team played with the student Günther Maaß in the 2nd League South. During these three years, Fulda competed against opponents such as BC Augsburg, Schwaben Augsburg, Hessen Kassel, Freiburger FC, Stuttgarter Kickers, Ulm 1846, 1. FC Pforzheim, FSV Frankfurt, ESV Ingolstadt, SV Waldhof and Darmstadt 98.

In the debut year of the second-rate regional football league South, 1963/64 , Fulda was also represented in the southern German second division alongside previous major league greats such as FC Bayern Munich , Kickers Offenbach, VfR Mannheim, FC Schweinfurt 05, SpVgg Fürth, Bayern Hof and SSV Reutlingen . At the start of the round there were two draws against Ingolstadt (1: 1) and Hof (0: 0) before they played against the championship favorites FC Bayern Munich on August 18, 1963. In front of 14,000 spectators, the outsider defied the team of coach Zlatko Čajkovski with Sepp Maier , Adolf Kunstwadl , Werner Olk , Karl Borutta , Heinz Ostner , Herbert Erhardt , Norbert Wodarzik , Rainer Ohlhauser , Dieter Brenninger , Werner Ipta and in the stadium on Grünwalder Straße Jakob Drescher a surprising 3: 3 draw. The 2-0 away win on October 27, 1963 at Kickers Offenbach was also a result that Fulda had not previously expected. Maaß, mainly used as a right defender in the World Cup system at the time, played like his teammates Theo Diegelmann (goalkeeper), Kurt Deckert, Paul Odenwald, Manfred Klimek, Peter Büttner, Hans-Jürgen Himmelmann , Peter John, Bernd Zimmer, Kurt Kraus , Bernd Windhausen and Edi Zaczyk a good first half of the season. In the second half of the season, however, Fulda collapsed and was relegated to the amateur camp as 18th with 26:50 in the season of 20. Maaß had proven his defensive qualities in 36 RL appearances (1 goal) under coach Lothar Schröder and also continued his career in the Hessenliga at Fulda.

In three rounds (1964/65 to 1966/67), however, the club failed to return to the Regionalliga Süd. The fact that Maaß's personal performance continued to stand out is demonstrated on the one hand by his appointment to the Hessian amateur team in the competition for the 1966/67 regional cup and on the other by his debut in the German amateur national team in December 1966.

For the 1967/68 season Maaß joined VfR Pforzheim in the 1st Amateur League North Baden. The season's expectations of the club with the return to the regional league could not be realized through the additions of Walter Kitter and Maaß. The team only finished eighth at the end of the round.

Selection teams

After Maaß failed in the 1966 regional cup competition with the representation of Hesse in Siegen in February 1966 at the eventual cup winner Westphalia (0-0 afterwards; drawing of lots for Westphalia), the way in 1967 led to the Hessian selection to the final. That took place on May 15, 1967 in Viernheim against the representation of North Baden with trainer Herbert Widmayer . Maaß acted as the "hanging right winger" and strengthened the midfield of the Hessians. The attack was based on the dribbling skills of the young Bernd Hölzenbein from Eintracht Frankfurt. Herbert Widmayer, the coach of Nordbaden, had his extended arm in midfield with 20-time amateur national player Horst Kunzmann and center runner Walter Kitter converted a free kick in the 77th minute to make it 2-1 for Nordbaden.

Already in the first half of the 1966/67 season, Maaß was used in an unofficial international match for the amateur national team on August 17, 1966 in Neu-Isenburg against Japan in a 2-0 win for the DFB-Elf. He came into this test match in the 2nd half for Erhard Ahmann as a right defender. In the last game of DFB coach Dettmar Cramer , Maass made his debut on December 7, 1966 in the Oberwerth stadium in Koblenz in the international match against Yugoslavia in the German amateur national team. The game took place as part of the UEFA Amateur Cup and was the last encounter in Group 3. With a win, the DFB amateurs would have been group winners. In front of 9,000 spectators, Maaß ran as a "tactical left winger". In the second half, the DFB-Elf took the lead three times through Dieter Zettelmaier (62nd), Kunzmann (77th) and Birkhold (87th), but Yugoslavia made it 3: 3 to the final score. Turkey, Germany and Yugoslavia each had 4: 4 points; with the better goal difference (3: 2) Turkey moved into the finals.

On April 12, 1967 Maaß came under the new DFB coach for the amateurs, Udo Lattek , for his second international match. The DFB selection won 4-0 against the Netherlands in Gladbeck . Maaß formed the runner row with Dieter Zorc and Rainer Stiller . In the first half of the 1967/68 season, the two Olympic qualifying games against Great Britain in October and November 1967 were the sporting highlight for the DFB amateurs. After moving from Fulda to Pforzheim, after various preparatory courses - DFB coach Lattek got his amateurs together for 17 days in five courses - on September 20, 1967 in Regensburg against Austria (0-0) for the third time in the amateur selection. In front of goalkeeper Friedhelm Schulte (Wattenscheid 09), the defenders Erhard Ahmann (Lüner SV) and Dieter Mietz (Wattenscheid 09), as well as the runner row with Kitter (VfR Pforzheim), Egon Schmitt (Kickers Offenbach) and Maaß formed the defensive formation. Maaß was used in both OS qualifiers: on October 25th in Augsburg in the 2-0 defeat and in the 1-0 success in the second leg on November 8th in Hendon . Lattek, who acted as Schön's assistant from April 1967, failed to qualify for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico with his team.

On December 27, 1967, a journey through Asia began at the Rhein-Main Airport in Frankfurt am Main . Originally intended as a reward for jumping over the Olympic hurdle, the 23 Asia Days were now viewed as the development stage for a new amateur national team. Maaß was a member of the DFB team for the Asia trip. He played in the international matches against Burma (0-0), Thailand (1-0), Hong Kong (1-0), Philippines (4-0) and Japan (1-0), each as a right wing runner. Maaß played his 11th and last amateur international game in the first international game after his trip to Asia on March 20, 1968 in Grieskirchen near Wels against Austria; the game was lost 2-0.

At Bitter, seven more student national games are performed for Maaß.
