The Güttinger Wald is a forest in the municipality of the same name in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland . It is located on the ridge of the lake and extends over an area of 600 hectares . A special feature is the largest contiguous oak area in Switzerland.

description

The Güttinger Forest consists of 14 different forest communities , the largest four of which cover almost 95% of the total area of the forest. The Güttinger Forest is 71% close to nature . The fir is 27% of the total supply of the largest portion of the forest . The ash and oak are with 22% and 20% of the total stock to second and third place.

Central forest management continued until the 1950s . In the course of the years this changed more and more to a sustainable forest operation. Oak in particular is protected and sustainably planted.

function

The main function of the Güttinger Forest is wood production. It is operated on 90% of the entire forest area. The tree composition is suitable for the location. Valuable and stable forest stands are also preserved through the right choice of tree species as well as wood harvesting technology and forest care.

The preservation of biodiversity is also an important function of the Güttinger Forest. Particular attention is paid to oak. There are agreements that restrict or prohibit the use of oak trees. To preserve the habitat for rare bird species, selected cave trees and drought trees are being preserved throughout the forest area .

The Güttinger Forest also serves as a local recreation area for the population.

history

During the Middle Ages, the Güttingen Forest was owned by the Bishop of Constance . As early as 1557, the Güttingen community tried to question the ownership rights of the Diocese of Constance in the Upper Forest. However, the diocese could his right by " letters and Cashless occupy" and by the fact that each of the Güttinger Ammann and Förster by the Vogt was chosen Bishop and remunerated. However, the verdict made by Bailiff Schicker in Frauenfeld contained a reservation that the necessary protection was required for the use of the forest.

It was not until 1771 that Bishop Maximilian Christoph von Rodt left the forest to the community of Güttingen so that the community could supply itself with wood. For a sustainable use of wood, he also wrote 16 commandments , which should ensure the long-term existence of the forest. Among other things, it was demanded that the forest needs a forester so that it does not become desolate. The Güttingen Forest was also never allowed to be divided.

Leisure attractions

The Güttinger Forest is a popular resort in the region , especially in summer . The main attraction is the oak path, which stretches over five kilometers through the Güttinger Forest. With eight orientation boards, the visitor can find detailed information about the Güttinger Forest. A special feature is the so-called quadruple area. It is a tree that grew out of four oaks that grew together .

In addition, four fire pits distributed in the forest offer the opportunity to linger.

Flora and fauna

Due to the wet and alkaline soil, many hardwoods grow in the Güttingen Forest . It is particularly worth mentioning that many oaks grow in the Güttinger Forest. Around a sixth of the total forest area is oak forest, although the site characteristics do not correspond to those of oak. This is because the oaks are grown and protected anthropogenically .

Due to the high proportion of oaks there is an exceptionally high rate of middle woodpeckers in the Güttinger Forest . Because the coarse bark trees offer the ideal habitat for the middle woodpeckers. In 2015, 36 middle woodpeckers were counted in the entire Güttinger Forest; With 3.71 medium-sized woodpeckers per 10 hectares, the Güttinger Forest has the largest concentration of medium-sized woodpeckers in Switzerland.

Otherwise, one often encounters animal species that are widespread across Switzerland, such as deer , foxes , wild boars , badgers , pine marten , hedgehogs , insects and amphibians .
