from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GC Edmondson (actually José Mario Garry Ordoñez Edmondson y Cotton ; born October 11, 1922 in Tabasco , Mexico ; died December 14, 1995 in Chula Vista , California ) was an American writer, best known for his science fiction novels is known.

Life

Edmondson was the son of William J. Edmondson and Edith, nee Cotton. During World War II from 1942 to 1946, he served in the US Marine Corps . He is said to have studied medicine in Vienna and temporarily worked as a blacksmith.

In 1955, the first SF story, Blessed are the Meek , appeared in Astounding , further stories followed, in particular the Mad Friend series, in which the adventures of the mysterious “crazy friend” are told in a whimsical manner. In 1965, these stories appeared as a fix-up along with The Ship That Sailed the Time Stream , Edmondson's first novel, in a volume as Ace Double . The novel tells of an American navy cutter that is set back 1000 years and experiences some adventures in the world of the Vikings . The novel was nominated for the Nebula Award in 1966.

In addition to his fiction work, he wrote a number of non-fiction books on metalwork and engine construction. He was married three times. most recently with Carmen Medrano Paez, and had four children.

place of birth

His obituary mentions Rachauchitlán in the state of Tabasco in Mexico as the place of birth. Other spellings of the otherwise not proven place are Rachuachitlan and Rascuachitlan in Robert Reginald's SF Lexica . However, Edmondson himself is quoted as follows:

"There is a tiny verse about my natal village, Villa Hermosa de Rascuachitlan, which might be helpful in visualizing the terrain:

Un pinche petate fue mi cuna
en tristes panales me envolvieron.
Tan rechingada fue mi fortuna
que pura verga a mamar me dieron.

Though he's eager to disclaim it, I believe the author was Antonio Plazas. "

Villahermosa is the largest city in the state of Tabasco, so it could be considered the birthplace if it wasn't a mystification of Edmondson at all.

Deviating information cites Washington State and Guatemala as the place of birth .
