GE Smith (* 27. January 1952 as George Edward Haddad in Stroudsburg , Pennsylvania ) is an American guitarist and songwriter .

Life

Smith began playing guitar at the age of four. His first major engagement in the music business was in the late 1970s when he went on tour with Dan Hartman . In 1979 he moved to Manhattan, where he signed on as a guitarist on Gilda Radner's Broadway show Gilda Live . They married in 1980, and they divorced in 1982. Between 1979 and 1985 he was lead guitarist for Hall & Oates ; he played among others on the hit singles Private Eyes and Maneater . In 1985, the Hall & Oates band took part in Live Aid , where Smith made contact with numerous superstars. As a result, he worked as a studio musician for Carly Simon , Mick Jagger and Tom Waits , among others .

In the mid-1980s, Smith received the offer to become leader of the live band on the hit television show Saturday Night Live . In this role he accompanied numerous guest stars, including guitarists Eddie Van Halen , David Gilmour and Buddy Guy . While at Saturday Night Live , Smith wrote the theme song for the Mike Myers- written Wayne's World sketch series , the success of which resulted in two feature films. Smith was part of Bob Dylan's live band for several years ; In 1992 he was musical director of Dylan's 30th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden . 1995 ended his engagement with SNL, the following year a live album with Buddy Guy appeared as Buddy Guy With GE Smith And The Saturday Night Live Band . In later years he toured with Roger Waters . He was also a band leader at election campaign events for the Republican Party ; both in 2012 for Mitt Romney and in 2016 for Donald Trump .

Smith has been married to singer Taylor Barton since 1990. Together they run the record label Green Mirror Music .
