history

The GBRE was founded in 1964 under the direction of the Odenwälder Hartstein-Industrie and took over the route from Reinheim to Groß-Bieberau from the "Reinheim-Reichelsheimer Eisenbahn". On this route she carried the freight traffic to a large quarry .

In September 1965 , the Groß-Bieberau-Reinheimer Eisenbahn GmbH was founded and acquired the ownership of the 4.6 km long railway and the concession. Over the years, the transport of products from the hard stone industry has increasingly shifted to the road. Finally, on December 12, 2001, traffic was completely shut down. But there were still operations on the route afterwards. Since the reopening in 2009, occasional traffic has been on the route again. At the end of 2001, DB Cargo's freight traffic to Reinheim ended. At the same time, the quarry's almost only customer, Deutsche Bahn , announced that it would no longer purchase ballast by rail from Groß-Bieberau in the future. For this reason the GBRE stopped its freight traffic. Since September 2009, ballast has been loaded onto rail wagons again in Groß-Bieberau. The route is public.
