FY 1214 b

GJ 1214 b , also Gliese 1214 b , is an extrasolar super-earth discovered in 2009 . When it was discovered by Zachory Berta , it was the most Earth-like known exoplanet. It is almost 50 light years away from Earth and in 38 hours orbits the red dwarf GJ 1214 in the constellation Snake Bearer , whose radiation is 200 times weaker than that of the sun . The distance to its central star is about 0.014 AU (about 2 million km). Its mass corresponds to almost 7 Earth masses , its radius is estimated to be a little more than two and a half earth radii .

There is clear evidence that GJ 1214 b is surrounded by a relatively thick atmosphere . The equilibrium temperature of the exoplanet depends on several factors, some of which are only inaccurately known or not known at all. Estimates suggest an equilibrium temperature between 120 and 280 ° C. This is based on an albedo of 0.75 (at 120 ° C) or 0 (at 282 ° C).

Observations from the Hubble telescope have shown that the atmosphere of GJ 1214 b may be composed primarily of water vapor . It is therefore believed that a large part of the planet itself is made up of water . That would make it a so-called ocean planet .
