Gabby Levy

Gabby Levy (born June 21, 1944 in Bergama , Turkey ) is an Israeli diplomat.

In early 1949 Levy and his parents emigrated to Israel. Levy attended the Israeli Defense Forces Military Academy in Haifa and served in the Israeli army from 1963 to 1968 . He studied Middle Eastern history and geography at Tel Aviv University . After receiving his bachelor's degree there , he continued his studies at Bar-Ilan University and received his master's degree .

After completing his studies in 1973, Levy began working in the Israeli Foreign Ministry . From 1975 to 1979 he was first second secretary, then first secretary at the Israeli embassy in Kingston , Jamaica . From 1979 to 1982 he was first secretary in the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1982 to 1985 he served as the consul for press and public relations at the Israeli consulate general in Chicago .

From 1989 to 1992 Levy was ambassador to the Dominican Republic and non-resident ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda , the Bahamas , Barbados, and St. Kitts and Nevis . After working as General Director of the Cultural Institute Iberia & Latin America (1992–1994) and as Director of the Official Guests Department of the Israeli Foreign Ministry (1994–1998), he again held the post of Ambassador. This time he represented Israel from 1999 to 2004 in Australia and was the same as non-resident ambassador in Fiji , the Marshall Islands , the Federated States of Micronesia , Nauru , Palau , Papua New Guinea , the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu accredited .

Levy has been the Israeli ambassador to Turkey since 2006. In September 2011 he was expelled in the wake of the publication of the UN report on the Israeli military operation against an aid fleet for the Gaza Strip in May 2010, in which nine Turkish activists on board the Mavi Marmara were killed. At the time of his expulsion, however, he was already in Israel, as his term as ambassador to Turkey was expiring anyway.
