The hake (Phycidae) live in shoals in the Atlantic Ocean , in the marginal seas such as the Mediterranean and the North Sea . Some species and juveniles are sometimes found in estuaries. They get their name from the long, thin pelvic fins that are forked at the end.
features
Forkfish have two dorsal fins, the first with 8 to 13 rays , the second with 43 to 68 rays, and an anal fin that is sometimes connected to the caudal fin. The pelvic fins have two very elongated fin rays. The animals are between 35 centimeters and 1.30 meters long. Their otoliths ("ear stones") are very specialized in contrast to those of other cod-like species. Their eggs are small and less than a millimeter in diameter. Fork hake only have one goatee .

Systematics
In Fishes of the World , a standard work on fish systematics, the American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson also counts the subfamily Gaidropsarinae to the forked cod , the forked cod in the narrow sense then become the subfamily Phycinae . In the phylogenetic study of the Japanese ichthyologist Hiromitsu Endo, they are, like the forked cod, a subfamily of the cod (Gadidae) as Phycinae . In the Internet sources Fishbase and Catalog of Fishes , the genera and species of Gaidropsarinae are placed in the family of tadpoles (Lotidae) without forming a separate subfamily. In the latest revision of the bony fish classification, however, they were raised to family rank in 2014.
