Gabriel Grüner (born August 8, 1963 in Mals , South Tyrol , Italy; † June 13, 1999 in Brazda, Macedonia ) was a reporter for Stern magazine .

Life

Grüner studied German and history at the University of Innsbruck and graduated from the Henri Nannen School in Hamburg . In 1991 he became a reporter in the international department of Stern . Grüner reported from the hot spots of the world, for example Afghanistan , Algeria , Sudan and again and again from the Balkan Peninsula .

In June 1999, Grüner was traveling for Stern in Kosovo . The Kosovo war officially ended on June 10th . On June 13th, Grüner and his colleagues, the photographer Volker Krämer and the translator Senol Alit were shot at on the Dulje Pass near Prizren . Kramer and Alit died immediately. Greener was found alive by Doctors Without Borders . They took him to a British post in the village of Stimlje below the pass. From there, a Canadian military helicopter transported him to the field hospital near Skopje . Grüner succumbed to his injuries there on the same day. He left behind his partner, the journalist Beatrix Gerstberger, who was expecting a child from him.

death

According to research by Stern , Grüner and his colleagues were murdered by the Russian Alexander T., who had volunteered for the Serbian army . He was on the run from KFOR and happened upon the three of them on the Dulje Pass, on which there was a Serbian tank position. According to the Stern reporter who researched the murders, Alexander T. is a fanatical Albanian hater and mistakenly believed that Senol Alit was an Albanian (in reality he was Macedonian). In addition, T. is said to have blamed the journalists for the Serbian defeat. There was a big TV on the car of Grüner, Krämer and Alit . Even to the horror of the Serbian soldiers present, T. shot the three of them with a Kalashnikov , dragged them out and continued his escape. An international arrest warrant was issued against T., but so far without success.

Gabriel Grüner Scholarship

In 1999, the Zeitenspiegel reporter agency initiated the Gabriel Grüner grant, endowed with € 6,000, which is intended to keep the memory of the Stern reporter alive. In this way, every year a reporter and a photographer are provided with the means to work out a joint committed report that would not be possible without financial help. The application, suggestions and work samples of the journalist teams are accepted until January 15th of each year, the announcement of the winners with the most convincing exposé usually takes place at the beginning of March and the award ceremony in May. The selected and awarded work must be completed by the end of November at the latest.
