Gabriele "Gaby" Bischoff (born January 4, 1961 in Bad Wildungen ) is a German trade unionist and politician . She was the President of the Workers' Group in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels . In 2019 she was elected to the European Parliament .

Life, education and study

Gabriele Bischoff first graduated from secondary school and then graduated from the König-Heinrich-Gymnasium in Fritzlar in 1980 . She then began studying political science and American studies at Philipps University in Marburg , then moved to the Free University in Berlin , where she completed her studies with a diploma in political science. 

To finance her studies, during which she joined the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft (DPG, today ver.di ), Bischoff worked as an express deliverer for Deutsche Post .

She is married and has one grown son.

Professional background

From 1989 to 1991 Gaby Bischoff worked at the Berlin Institute for Social Research (BIS) at the University of Applied Sciences for Economics (FHW) in Berlin as a research assistant.

In 1991 she worked full-time as a trade unionist on the board of IG Metall in Frankfurt am Main, the department for gender equality policy , of which she was the head until the end of 2000. During this time she was actively involved in the European Metalworkers Federation (EMF) and in the Women's Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). As a permanent guest and member, she has been a member of the board of the European Trade Union Confederation for many years.

From 2000 to 2005, Bischoff worked as a social advisor in the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels, before moving to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in Berlin as a special advisor from 2006 to 2008 .

From 2008 she took over the management of the European Policy Department on the DGB Federal Executive Committee and deals with EU policy issues.

In 2015 she was elected President of the Workers' Group in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels, where she has been a member since 2009.

Gaby Bischoff is a board member of the European Movement in Germany .

Gaby Bischoff joined the SPD in 2008 and was nominated as the top candidate in Berlin for the 2019 European elections on June 1, 2018 .

In January 2019, she announced that she wanted to resign from her previous union activities in order to be able to devote more time to her candidacy and the associated tasks in the European election campaign.

She was elected to the European Parliament on May 26, 2019.

Others

Gaby Bischoff is a member of the General German Bicycle Club e. V. ( ADFC ) and counts bike and kayak tours among her private interests.
