Gabriele Schor (born April 17, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian art critic , curator and publicist. She has been the director of the Verbund Collection since 2004 .

Live and act

Gabriele Schor studied philosophy and did her doctorate with a thesis on Alberto Giacometti . She first worked at the Tate Gallery , London ; In 1996 she curated a Barnett Newman exhibition a. a. for the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Albertina in Vienna. She worked for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in Vienna as a correspondent and art critic for seven years . At the same time she taught modern art and art criticism at the universities of Graz , Salzburg and Vienna . Gabriele Schor has been the founding director of the Verbund Collection in Vienna since 2004, with a focus on 'Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s' and 'Perception of Spaces and Places'. Together with numerous scholars and curators, she edited monographs for women artists. In January 2012 she published the catalog raisonné for Cindy Sherman's early work , which was created in close collaboration with Sherman.

Gabriele Schor has built up the collection of feminist art from the second half of the 20th century since 2004 and developed the exhibition series “ Feminist Avant-garde ”. She introduced the term “feminist avant-garde” with the publication of the same name in the art-historical discourse in order to highlight the pioneering work of these women artists in the 1970s. She understands this to be an important phenomenon in the history of art in the 1970s: the emancipation of women artists who re-created their own self-determined image of women in an art world dominated by men. These artists reflected, commented on and transformed stereotypical female role models and social expectations of women in their work. They often used new (more) media and art forms such as photography, experimental film, video art, performance and action, collage, and spatial installation.
