Gabriele von Bülow (born May 28, 1802 in Berlin ; † April 16, 1887 there ) was the daughter of Wilhelm von Humboldt and the wife of Heinrich von Bülow .

Life

Gabriele was born as the third daughter of Wilhelm and Caroline von Humboldt ; she had seven siblings. She was particularly attached to her sister Adelheid, who was two years older than her. She spent the first years of her life in Rome at her father's ambassadorial court, even when he had already returned to Berlin. In 1810 the children moved with their mother from Rome to Vienna, where Humboldt acted as envoy until 1814. Then the family moved to Berlin for two years; then to Frankfurt am Main .

There Gabriele became engaged to her father's secretary, Heinrich von Bülow, on October 30, 1816 . Caroline von Humboldt did not marry her daughter until years later. Gabriele von Humboldt spent two years in Rome again and returned to Berlin in 1819. In 1820 von Bülow, now Legation Councilor , returned from London , and the couple married on January 10, 1821. As a successful diplomat, Bülow spent most of his life in London and was appointed ambassador there in 1827, so that Gabriele lived in London from 1828 to 1836 lived, but with longer breaks on the occasion of the deaths of her parents in 1829 and 1835. She spent a lot of time caring for her father in Tegel.

Heinrich von Bülow became the Prussian Foreign Minister in 1842, but died in 1846. The widow von Bülow moved to Potsdam , but made another trip to Rome and took care of her children and grandchildren over the next 40 years and later, as the last surviving heiress, of that Her father's legacy (especially the Tegel and Burgörner estates ). Although, in contrast to her mother, she led a rather modest life, Gabriele von Bülow remained in close contact with the social greats of her time. A special highlight was in 1861, when she was allowed to be Queen Augusta's chief steward on the occasion of Wilhelm I's coronation . In 1883 her 81st birthday was chosen for the unveiling of the two Humboldt monuments in front of the Berlin University; she was the guest of honor at the event.

She was the godmother of Marie von Olfers .

There are portraits of, among others , August Grahl (1831 in London) and Gottlieb Schick (1809 in Rome).

In 1938 the Gabriele von Bülow Oberschule in Berlin was named after her.
