Gabrielle Kirk McDonald

Gabrielle Anne Kirk McDonald (born April 12, 1942 in Saint Paul, Minnesota ) is an American lawyer . She served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia from 1993 to 1999 , including its President from 1997 to 1999, and has been a member of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal since 2001 .

Life

Gabrielle Kirk McDonald was in 1942 in Saint Paul was born and completed her academic training from 1959 to 1961 at the Boston University , 1961-1963 at Hunter College and then at the Howard University , where she in 1966 a jurisprudential graduated as LL.B. attained. She then worked as a lawyer for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People before setting up her own law firm in Houston in 1969 , specializing in cases of discrimination in the workplace.

In 1979 she was appointed a judge on the United States District Court for the southern state of Texas . In this position she worked until 1988, after which she worked again in private practice in Austin . In 1993, she was elected judge at the newly established International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , where she served until 1999, including as President of the Court from 1997 to 1999. She then became special adviser on human rights for the American mining company Freeport-McMoRan and has been a member of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal since 2001 .

Gabrielle Kirk McDonald was married and has a son and daughter.

Awards

In recognition of her work, Gabrielle Kirk McDonald received the 1998 Goler T. Butcher Medal from the American Society for International Law and the National Bar Association , an association of attorneys of African American descent, the Equal Justice Award and the Ronald Harmon Brown Award of International Excellence . The Georgetown University , the University of Notre Dame , the Howard University, Stetson College of Law and the Amherst College awarded her an honorary doctorate . In 2001 a commemorative publication was published in her honor with the title "Essays on ICTY Procedure and Evidence in Honor of Gabrielle Kirk McDonald".
