List of apple varieties |
The gack apple is a cultivar of the cultivated apple , it was first described in 1979. As a local variety, the Gacksapfel can be found even more frequently in Asslar-Berghausen, on the Lahn and Dill .
history
The farmer and wood cutter Ernst Gack (1843–1921) found this variety around 1870 in the forest near Aßlar-Berghausen . This tree he converted as a sapling could be preserved until 1964. The Gackapfel was selected as the Hessian local variety of the year 2006 .
description
The mid-late bloom is not sensitive to the weather. The apples are medium-sized with a smooth skin. The color is typically purple-gray frosted on a pale green base color. The flesh is green to yellowish white, medium firm, juicy and sour.
Usage and Vulnerabilities
It is considered a very good commercial and cider apple and can also be used as a table apple from December onwards due to its good shelf life . It ripens from late September to mid-October and can be used as a winter apple from November to April (May). The variety is frost hardy, robust and resistant, especially to scab . However, large fruits tend to be glassy and speckled .
Location and maintenance requirements
The Gackapfel is undemanding in terms of soil and climate and can therefore be cultivated at higher altitudes. It forms a large, spreading crown and should be stimulated to better branching and new shoots with a regular pruning in order to control its tendency to alternate .
