List of apple varieties

The Spitzrabau is a local variety of culture apple (Malus domestica). The variety was often called gray and pointed reindeer under lace .

history

The variety has never been described as a purely local variety in the pomological sense. However, it was recommended in the fruit range for the Starkenburg region in 1915 . Believed to have been lost after many years, the Spitzra building was found again in 2008 in fruit exhibitions in Neckargemünd and Nieder-Kinzig . The variety is now available again in individual local tree nurseries. Spitzrabau was Hessian local variety of the year 2012 . In the course of publicizing and preserving the variety, the artist group Artelino 2013 in Hessenpark Neu-Anspach created a seedling opposite theGroß-Umstadt synagogue planted as a typical Hessian fruit tree.

description

The fruit is quite striking with its typical shape and forms a pointed, medium-sized apple with uneven sides. The smooth skin is striped straw yellow and orange-red, lenticels only appear sporadically. The apple has no odor and has a pressure-resistant skin. The flesh is green to yellowish-white, medium firm, sweet and sour and without any special aroma.

use

The variety wilts severely in storage and the flesh becomes tender so that it can be used directly for baking, apple sauce or as a cider apple . It is only acceptable as a table apple if it is well stored .

Cultivation

The variety is suitable for medium to rough areas of the Odenwald due to its undemanding soil and climate . The Spitzrabau is very robust, and some trees are even known that are over a hundred years old (in 2013) ( Lauten-Weschnitz district ). The tree is vigorous and has large, high crowns. A regular parental cut is necessary and a moderate maintenance cut is recommended. Despite the tendency towards alternation , the yield is reliable and high. The apples ripen at the end of September to the beginning of October, and they are ready for consumption in October and November. The shelf life in the warehouse is only recommended until the end of February due to the severe wilting.
