List of apple varieties

The striped mate apple is a cultivar of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica) and belongs to the group of mate apples .

history

The variety was already widespread in the 18th century, but was probably described under other names at that time. Well-known synonyms are Berliner, Berliner Schafsnase, Runde Schafsnase or Steilapfel (also Steul- or Stoilapfel) in Wiesbaden and Rettigapfel in Collenberg-Fechenbach. In 1869 the variety was recommended with the following words: "One of the very best and most persistent agricultural crops in this area". In 1876, the apple was correctly named with its current name by C. Thomae in a pamphlet about the Matäpfel. In the manuscript written by Richard Zorn between 1934 and 1939 , the apple was described and illustrated again. In 1951, the variety was mistakenly recommended for cultivation as an undemanding apple, again under the name Berliner Schafsnase, for individual districts of Hessen Nassau.

Its distribution area is mainly southern Hesse. It can still be found here and there in orchards . In the middle of the last century he was often to be found in the Wetterau , Frankfurt , Main-Taunus and Wiesbaden. In 2010, the Striped Matapfel was Hessian local variety of the year .

description

Flower and fruit

The flowering of the Striped Matapple is relatively late and insensitive. The fruit is quite large, with a smooth skin and a greenish-yellow base color, with vivid red stripes above it. The ripe apple has a light scent, but also a pressure-resistant skin. The crumbly pulp is green-yellowish-white, a bit tart, very juicy, but without any special aroma.

use

The striped mate apple ripens from the end of September to the beginning of October and is used as a commercial apple and for cider production (cider apple ). It is ready to eat from November and can be kept until January / February ( winter variety ).

Cultivation

The Striped Matapple grows medium to strong and develops a bulky (expansive) crown. The tree's yields are high and regular, but tend to alternate . Therefore, the upbringing cut needs special care and the maintenance cut should be moderate. The tree is undemanding and also suitable for higher altitudes, the susceptibility to fruit tree cancer is low.
