List of apple varieties

The fame from Kelsterbach is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The apple is a local Hessian variety from the Rhine-Main area around Kelsterbach , south of Frankfurt am Main . The variety was chosen by the “ Hessian Local Variety of the Year ” campaign as the orchard variety of the year 2018 in order to preserve the pomological cultural heritage in Hesse. For this purpose, young trees are attracted by cooperating tree nurseries and offered for new planting.

description

fruit

The medium-sized apple has a smooth, dry and partly shiny skin with a light red covering color. The peel can be slightly yellowish striped or faded and is covered with peel points and lenticels . This appearance ensures that the fame from Kelsterbach is often confused with the red star ribbon . The flesh is whitish, very juicy and has a sweet to slightly sour taste.

The fame from Kelsterbach ripens in October and can then stay on the tree for even longer before it is stored. Ripe for consumption extends from December to March, the shelf life lasts even longer, which is what distinguishes the apple as a winter variety. The fame from Kelsterbach is considered a good economic apple , but can also be used as an apple . The apple variety has high, regular yields.

Due to its aroma of fame from Kelsterbach is also used for fruit brandies and single-variety cider and juice used.

tree

The trees have no special demands on the climate or the soil. They can get very big and old, they have a strong growth habit and very often grow crooked in one direction with increasing age. The wood of the tree is considered to be very valuable due to its salmon-red color.

Origin and Distribution

Glory from Kelsterbach, drawn by Richard Zorn

According to oral reports, the fame of Kelsterbach was first discovered around 1900 on the site of a brick factory in Kelsterbach. The first written mention of the apple comes from Richard Zorn , who described it in 1934 as "Beautiful from Kelsterbach". Further written records of the fame from Kelsterbach exist from the 1940s, for example in the variety directory of Hessen-Nassau or in the magazine Das Gartenjahr . At that time, the fame from Kelsterbach was relatively widespread on orchards in the Frankfurt am Main area. Due to its late ripeness and long shelf life in the winter months, the variety was very popular during World War II .

The similarity to the widespread Red Star Renette ensured that it was often confused with this one and was therefore only very rarely followed. As a result, there were almost only old trees left in the 2000s. However, pomologists discovered isolated young trees, which also came from being mistaken for the star reindeer and were planted almost unintentionally. At the latest with the nomination as Hessian orchard variety of the year, work began on planting the fame from Kelsterbach in a targeted manner.
