Generative characteristics
The sheath yellow star is early flowering. The flowers are solitary or up to five in a shabby inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The blunt, yellow tepals and the flower stalk are not hairy.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = approx. 104.
ecology
Typical for geophytes , the sheath yellow star survives the winter with its onions.
The pre-female flowers containing nectar are mostly pollinated by bees . The nectar is formed in septal nectaries, i.e. between the ovary fans. Germable seeds are seldom formed. If germinable seeds are formed, these are spread by ants .

Its spread is currently decreasing. Its distribution area extends from Europe to the Caucasus. In Germany the Scheiden-Gelbstern is classified as a national type of responsibility within the national strategy for biological diversity of the federal government.
