Galerie und Verlag St. Gertrude is a German publisher founded by Dierk Lemcke and based in Hamburg. The publishing house focuses on publications on the work of the artist Horst Janssen . For more than a decade, the specialty of the St. Gertrude publishing house was the unique constellation that a publisher only had one artist in its program. Since 2006 the gallery and the publishing house have also opened up to the work of other artists.

history

The history of the publishing house is closely linked to the person of Horst Janssen. Dierk Lemcke initially ran the St. Gertrude antiquarian bookshop at Gertrudenkirchhof in Hamburg since 1977 . Right from the start, there were small exhibitions in the back room with works of art that he had bought through the second-hand bookshop. Dierk Lemcke finally got to know Hartmut Frielinghaus, Janssens' printer, through trading in art, from whom he initially accepted and successfully resold signed posters. The first meeting between Janssen and Lemcke resulted in more than ten years of intensive collaboration, which led to the joint production of almost 200 books. 1981 was the year of the 'laying of the foundation stone' for Lemcke's publishing activities: he published a series of postcards with drawings by Horst Janssen; the actual birth of the publishing house from the antiquarian bookshop is to be set for this point in time (the regular and legal establishment of the GmbH did not take place until 1984). The first Janssen book published by the publisher was a new edition of the Janssenhof with a cover specially designed by the artist for this purpose. In 1984 Dierk Lemcke bought the former police barracks at Goldbachstrasse 9 from the city of Hamburg. In the same year he opened the St. Gertrude publishing house there. Since then, the publishing house has been expanded to include gallery work on a large scale. St. Gertrude is still an important lender of Janssen works for museum exhibitions. Works from the collection of St. Gertrude were u. a. Shown in the Munch Museum Oslo , the Museum of Modern Art in Kamakura, Japan, the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Horst Janssen Museum , Oldenburg, Gottorf Castle , the Käthe Kollwitz Museum , the Rembrandt Museum in Amsterdam and the Leopold Museum in Vienna.

From 1984 until his death in 1995, Horst Janssen had a studio on the first floor of the building on Goldbachstrasse. He worked there regularly. After his fall from the balcony in 1990, an etching workshop was set up for him, in which numerous etchings were created.

In 2014 a generation change took place at St. Gertrude. Sabrina Lemcke, daughter of Dierk Lemcke, has been managing director since then.

Gallery and publishing house St. Gertrude sees itself to this day as a contact point for those interested in Janssen, issues expert reports on Janssen's work and advises on the development of collections.

The gallery and publishing house St. Gertrude is a member of the Hamburg Galleries Association.

Publishing program

During Horst Janssen's lifetime, the program was characterized by an intensive collaboration between the artist and the publisher Dierk Lemcke. Horst Janssen himself was extremely bibliophile: "He planned the series of his books into the next millennium. In them he recorded the compendium of his life's work, and the more extensive this bibliomania became on his own account, the more he commented on himself with brilliant texts. He wrote as well as he drew. " He himself was of the opinion that his "drawing [...] was predestined for the meeting in the book". The concern of the publisher is to prepare Janssen's work scientifically and at the same time make it more easily accessible to interested parties. In addition to the content component, the focus is always on the quality of the book, which is due to Lemcke's origins in the antiquarian book. The publications are divided into several series.

The work overviews

In the mid-1980s, Janssen and Lemcke forged the plan to publish the artist's life's work in one series. In view of the immeasurable amount of probably 14,000 drawings, 3,000 etchings, hundreds of watercolors, woodcuts, lithographs, leaflets and posters as well as the fact that Janssen gave away many works or destroyed them again, it was clear from the start that “it is not completeness, but ' only 'a successful selection from his oeuvre could be the goal'. The work overviews are sorted according to context. They reveal to the reader the wealth of works that Janssen created on the respective topic and offer an insight into his art, his feelings and his thinking. Janssen made the selection himself for the first five volumes of Women Portraits, Landscapes, Eros, Death and Mask, Nature Morte and Self-Portrait . After his death followed - as planned together - The Animal, Friends and Others and The Poster . Two further volumes are still open: an overview of the objects, collages and overpaintings and drawings that have been started . The latter turns out to be extremely difficult in that respect, as Janssen can no longer help to clarify which work is to be regarded as just started and which as finished.

The Gertrudenformat

Janssen himself had the idea for the Gertrudenformat. He wanted a series of books to read comfortably in bed. The unusual format of the stapled booklets of 25 × 13.3 cm is due to this wish. Overall, this type of book was particularly suitable for working with Janssen, as it benefited his impatient temperament and creative chaos, and Janssen's spontaneous ideas could be published here quickly. The Gertrudenformat covers the complete Janssen spectrum: it presents speeches and letters, lithographic and etching series. Janssen's own visual worlds and views are supplemented by the texts of well-known authors such as Werner Hofmann or Manfred Osten as well as by contributions from friends of the artist and experts.

Capers

Another series of books by the publisher are Kapriolen. They came from Horst Janssen's friendship with Gerhard Schack , who published them through the St. Gertrude publishing house. The first caper Leporello: The Beloved of Don Juan appeared on April 22, 2007 on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name in the Janssen-Kabinett of the Hamburger Kunsthalle from April 22 to August 5, 2007. Gerhard Schack died a few days before the book was finished. The series is continued in his memory, the second volume The Lust of the Moment. Horst Janssen und die Blankeneser appeared in 2014 as part of the exhibition of the same name in the parish hall of the church in Hamburg Blankenese .

Exhibition catalogs

Numerous exhibition catalogs for exhibitions by Horst Janssen have been published by the St. Gertrude publishing house.

Biographical

Galerie und Verlag St. Gertrude, in collaboration with Horst Janssen and with numerous authors, has brought out various publications that are intensively devoted to the life of the artist.

Posters

Horst Janssen's posters make up a not insignificant part of the publishing program. Janssen accompanied many of his exhibitions with a poster - initially in the form of lithographs, line etchings and occasional screen prints, then mostly as offset prints since the 1970s. The poster gave Janssen the opportunity to spread his artistic ideas. He was able to initiate discussions through notices in public spaces and sales through bookshops and poster galleries. “Horst Janssen and the poster are not only two related terms for admirers of the artist. 'Janssen posters' [are] sold internationally as offset prints, sometimes in thousands of copies. The artist's popularity is based not least on these prints distributed by the Hamburg publishing house St. Gertrude. ” The posters were created over almost four decades from 1957 to 1994. The scope of Janssen's poster work is over 200 pieces. Janssen signed the posters himself during his lifetime, and he is said to have managed up to 1,000 in an hour. “The artist's signature ensured that the nimbus of the original was preserved, and it helps control sales so that the market doesn't get out of hand.” Since his death, his daughter Lamme has stamped them and with a copyright on the back noted.

graphic

With the move from St. Gertrude to Goldbachstrasse and the ever closer collaboration between artist and publisher, Janssen's graphic work was also distributed through the publisher. Janssen's famous Laocoon cycle was shown for the official inauguration of the building. All color etchings - Janssen dedicated himself to this technique from 1988 - were published by St. Gertrude.

Extended publishing program

Since the gallery opened in 2006 to other artistic positions that deal with similar topics as Janssen, the publishing program has also expanded. Catalogs on the artists represented by St. Gertrude appear continuously, such as:

gallery

From the beginning, art was an important component of the publishing house. First in the back room of the antiquarian bookshop, then since 1984 in the large rooms of the building on Goldbachstrasse, where works by Horst Janssen were exhibited. A good decade after Janssen's death, the gallery also opened up to other artistic positions. Since then, Dieter Roth , Jürgen Brodwolf and Arnulf Rainer have also been part of the permanent gallery program. Hervé Bohnert and Dirk Meinzer have also been represented since 2012/13, and in 2016 St. Gertrude showed the work of the Spanish artist Pedro Déniz in Germany for the first time. However, all artists have in common that they deal intensively with topics such as death and transience, which results in points of contact with the work of Horst Janssen.

Gallery activities

St. Gertrude has been realizing national and international exhibitions since 1985. In addition to traveling exhibitions with works by Horst Janssen in Japan, the Albertina in Vienna and other locations, exhibitions with works by Janssen and other gallery artists are also regularly presented in the publishing house. St. Gertrude has been participating in Art Karlsruhe every year since 2005 .
