Galo Legarda Gaete (born March 2, 1933 in Guayaquil , Ecuador , † 1991 ) was an Ecuadorian carom player in the three- cushion discipline .
Career
From a young age he was attracted to the magical movement of the ivory balls on the table of the green cloth and tried to learn the secrets of this sport. At the age of twelve he made the first devices on the tables of the "Guayaquil Yacht Club" and quickly entered the world of the three-band, who learned the secrets of experienced champions of the time, such as "Chivo" Echeverría and Miguel Madinyá. It was not long before he surpassed his teachers with devotion and persistence.
Legarda made his international debut in 1960 as a representative of Ecuador at the South American Championships in Buenos Aires . To his surprise, he discovered that it was essential to wear "heavy" clothing (suit, long-sleeved shirt, bow tie and vest) that made it difficult to move freely. The tuxedo and bow tie were a problem that he had to overcome. He said:
«Originalmente me sentí muy incómodo. Poco a poco me fui acostumbrando, aunque siempre extrañaba las cómodas camisas de manga corta que usaba en Guayaquil. Menos times que esta disposición, emanada de la Unión Mundial de Billar, fue luego rectificada »
“Originally I felt very uncomfortable. I'm gradually getting used to it, although I've always missed the comfortable short-sleeved shirts I wore in Guayaquil. Fortunately, this provision, which comes from the Union Mondiale de Billard , was later corrected. "
"El Tigre", as he was called, was the most important three-cushion player in Ecuadorian sports history. He was South American champion in 1975, Latin American champion in 1977, 1980 and 1985, fourth behind Johann Scherz at the 1981 World Cup in Cairo and fifth at the 1966 World Cup in Lima . In 1964 (Ostend, Belgium), 1965 (Hilversum, Netherlands), 1977 (Tokyo) and 1980 (Buenos Aires) he made it to the quarter-finals of the World Championships. He was 27 times national champion, 20 times representative of Latin America at the world championships and South American and Pan-American record holder.
