Ganado ( Navajo : Lók'aahnteel ) is a settlement in Apache County in the US state of Arizona . It has 1505 inhabitants on 23 km²; so the population density is 64.9 inhabitants per km². The city lies at an altitude of 1946 m to the west below the Defiance Plateau, which is a maximum of 2400 m high . Ganado is a chapter of the Navajo Nation , the self-governing territory of the Navajo, and therefore has no community or city status.
Settlement attractions include the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site , a trading post dating from 1876 . It was taken over by the National Park Service in 1965 and is the only active business enterprise operated by them in the traditional style. In the wider area are the Canyon De Chelly National Monument (50 km north) and the Petrified Forest National Park (85 km south).
Arizona State Route 264 and US Highway 191 run through Ganado .
