Ganfei is a town and municipality in the Minho-Lima sub-region in northern Portugal .

history

The monastery church of Ganfei

During the Visigothic period a monastery was founded here ( Convento de Ganfei or Mosteiro de Ganfei ), and it probably already existed in 691. After the Arab conquest in 711 and the subsequent Christian reconquest , the monastery was rebuilt in 1018, and today's place developed in its vicinity.

The first Portuguese canonized by the Catholic Church, São Teotónio (1082–1162) was born here.

With the opening of the Linha do Minho railway in 1875, Ganfei was also connected to the Portuguese railway network. Since the section between Valença and Monção was closed, Ganfei no longer has its own rail connection. The former railway line has now been converted into a cycle path that is part of the Ecopista do Rio Minho route .
