Gangs of Wasseypur (Original title: Gangs of वासेपुर ) is a two-part Indian action film by Anurag Kashyap .

action

First part

In the mining town of Wasseypur there are two warring clans that have been at war for three generations. On one side is the gang boss Sharif Qureshi, who claims the region for himself. On the other side is Shahid Khan, also the leader of a gang of gangsters. When Shahid begins to rob the loaded trains of the British colonial rulers and rob them, he becomes a thorn in Sharif's side. Sharif then banishes Shahid to the neighboring town of Dhanbad. Shahid now lives there with his wife and has to do heavy work in a coal mine. His wife dies giving birth to their son Sardar Khan. A few years passed, India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947 and gang boss Ramadhir Singh appropriated the mine where Shahid works. Singh is a young industrialist who, through mafia-like methods and influencing trade unions, rose to become a powerful man in the region. As a result, Shahid rises to be a brutal thug in Singh's gang of gangsters. When Singh begins to see Shadid as a threat to himself, he has him murdered. Shahid's son Sardar escapes the attack with the help of his relative Nasir Khan and grows into a man. He cuts a bald head and vows not to let his hair grow again until he has avenged his father's murder and has become the most powerful man in Wasseypur.

Second part

The second part ties in with the events of the first. Sardar is the leader of a clan that is at war with Ramadhir's clan. His sons Faizal and Danish are supposed to take over the leadership of the clan, but because Faizal is so shy no one believes he is suitable for the position. To make matters worse, Faizal's brother Danish has fallen in love with the daughter of an enemy clan member and marries her against the will of his own family. When Danish is killed in the course of the power struggles, Faizal has to prove himself alone as the leader. He uses drugs and is obviously unhappy with his situation. With the help of the businessman Shamshad Alam, he still manages to build a large gangster syndicate with deeply entangled relationships.

backgrounds

From left to right: Manoj Bajpai, Richa Chadda, Anurag Kashyap, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Piyush Mishra 2012
  • Although Gangs of Wasseypur is counted among the Bollywood films, this film completely dispenses with musical dance interludes and other typical features of South Asian mainstream cinema.
  • The city of Wasseypur is located in the Indian state of Jharkhand and has a population of just over 200,000. This state is a particularly important coal mining area in India.
  • Anurag Kashyap filmed some car chases without a permit on totally overcrowded streets and with unsuspecting people.
  • Huma Qureshi made her debut with this film.
