Garbade (family name)
Garbade is a German family name .
Origin and meaning
The name Garbade has been traceable in Bremen since the 12th century and comes from the German noble family Garbade, which was accepted into the nobility by Charles IV (HRR) . The family coat of arms shows a building standing on water, crowned by a rooster, next to it is an upwardly curved piece of wood from which three green clover leaves grow out.
Evidence of the ancestors can be found from Knight Dietrich Garbade (-1658), the councilor and head of the St. Johanns Kloster Hospital in Bremen (-1627), the landowner Berend Garbade (1703–1766) and the councilors of Bremen Theodor and Heinrich Garbade 1879 resp. 1881. In the 20th century, the name Garbade represented numerous merchants in Germany , Cuba and the United States , such as Theodore Garbade or Kenneth Garbade in the United States.
The origin of the Indian branch of the garbade in Maharashtra is still unknown. The name is most likely derived from the Sanskrit terms Garbha (" womb ") and Deep ("a small earthenware lamp ").
The surname can linguistically be traced back to the following origins:
- Auf Gar (Dutch modification of Ger = throwing spit). Old High German : Ger bodo : Speer boats.
- On: Gar / bade : East Frisian : Deich / Bauer.
