Jochen Garbsch
Jochen George Garbsch (born October 4, 1936 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † April 23, 2003 in Munich ) was a German provincial Roman archaeologist who mainly dealt with archeology in the former Roman provinces of Raetia and Noricum .
Jochen Garbsch studied at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1965 . Until January 1, 1972, he was employed by the Commission for the Comparative Archeology of Roman Alpine and Danube Countries of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and then moved to the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich as chief curator .
His work is trend-setting both through his meticulous formal approach as well as through the actual results, which are still mostly valid today. Among other things, his early documentation on women's costumes in the Noric - Pannonian region in the 1st and 2nd centuries is significant due to the preserved pictorial representations of tombstones and grave finds and his work on militaria and military history of the Romans. In addition, he wrote articles on Roman provincial sites, wrote extensive historical outlines for exhibitions on various ancient topics and dealt with studies on various individual topics in numerous essays and books.
On April 30, 2003, Jochen Garbsch's funeral took place at Munich's Ostfriedhof , attended by numerous friends and colleagues.
