Hans Klumbach

Hans Klumbach (born April 26, 1904 in Wolfach ; † December 14, 1992 in Mainz ) was a German classical and provincial Roman archaeologist and director of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (RGZM) in Mainz.

Life

Klumbach spent his youth in Stuttgart , where he attended the humanistic Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium . He then studied Classical Archeology and Classical Philology in Tübingen and Heidelberg from 1922 to 1927 . As a student in Tübingen, he was already intensively concerned with the Roman stone monuments of his homeland, such as the lapidarium of the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart. In the summer of 1927 he was at Carl Watzinger in Tübingen with the work "Tarentines grave art" Dr. phil. PhD. The travel grant from the German Archaeological Instituteenabled him to travel through the Mediterranean in 1928/29. After his return in 1930 he became assistant director at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz. In 1935 the fourth edition of Karl Schumacher's Germanic catalog, which he had completely revised, and in 1937 his dissertation as a booklet of the Tübingen research on archeology and art history appeared .

After military service and imprisonment from 1940 to 1947, Klumbach became custodian in 1950 and director of the Roman department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in 1954. Since 1952 he was honorary professor for Provincial Roman Archeology at the University of Mainz . Hans Klumbach was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1969 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.

VII, then Filtzinger p. 633, he worked as a research assistant in the Athens and Rome departments of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). According to the official annual reports with the DAI's list of employees from 1927/28, 1928/29, 1929/30, 1930/31, however, Klumbach's assistant at the DAI does not emerge.
