The garden sun eye is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 180 centimeters. The plant forms a rhizome . The leaves are opposite , eilanzettlich , pointed and serrate . At the bottom they narrow like a stalk. The top and bottom are hairy. The flower heads are long stalked and terminal and axillary. The 8 to 18 ray-flowers measure 20 to 40 × 6 to 13 millimeters and are yellow to golden yellow in color.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
