occupation

Gasmann is a film drama by Arne Körner that premiered in October 2019 as part of the Hof International Film Festival.

action

Bernd works as an actor at the St. Pauli Theater in Hamburg, but is chronically dissatisfied with himself and the theater business, as he has only received secondary roles so far. Now he lets the director suggest to appear in “Der Gasmann”, a play that is about two SS officers who, shortly before the end of the war, roam the country with a mobile gas chamber to “collect” people. Bernd is suspicious of the director who actually makes feature films, because his first theater work is supposed to be pure entertainment. Bernd's "main role" is a nightmare, the theater rehearsals and the play permeate Bernd's life more and more until a strange connection emerges between him and the gas man. Otherwise life is difficult for Bernd - the ex only talks the bare minimum with him, the bailiff wants to see money, the few moments with the little son are far too short for both of them. The eccentric members of a male-only literary circle are Bernd's only friends. Only the liaison with a mysterious young woman is a ray of hope for Bernd.

Reviews

In her review in the online cinema magazine Cineuropa , Ola Salwa writes that Arne Körner's ironic coming-of-age film is bursting with black humor , has a sad, if not depressing undertone and revolves around a protagonist who refuses to grow up become. Bernd is an antihero who doesn't want to grow or be successful, and it is difficult to understand what he wants from life, which makes him a fascinating, if annoying protagonist. He is not a dreamer, but literally a "Rebel Without a Cause". It's very refreshing to see a film about a man who just doesn't seem to want to get out of his comfort zone, and the film thrives on the great performance of Polish-born actor Rafael Stachowiak , according to Salwa. He plays his character with a simultaneous inner coolness and warmth that you can empathize with.
