The inn on Volkacher Hauptstrasse

The Gasthof Zur Schwane is one of the oldest inns in Franconia . The building is located on the main street in the middle of the Lower Franconian town of Volkach . In addition to a guest house and a hotel, the company now also includes an award-winning winery ; in the past, a brewery was also operated on the premises.

history

The inn was first mentioned in 1404, when it was run by the Schwan family, which gave it its name. Initially, the hosts of the Schwanengasthaus were not allowed to brew beer. A note in the Volkacher Salbuch justified this ban with the fact that the beer could damage wine sales. In 1675 Georg Schwan (1644–1678) was still brewing beer without permission; he was indicted and convicted by the city of Volkach. From then on, the beer from the Düll brewery from nearby Krautheim was served.

In the following years, however, Georg Schwan was allowed to brew his own beer for a year. He now also supplied the inns in the vicinity. It was not until February 15, 1734 that the city finally granted the privilege of brewing beer here . Adam Reinold, the "Schwanenwirt" at that time, built his own brewery in an outbuilding of the inn. In addition to the lighter winter beer, he also produced a so-called summer beer.

It is also certain that the hosts of the swans maintained hop gardens in the vicinity of the city. On February 20, 1863, some of these gardens were sold to Georg Fischer from Garstadt . In 1830 the brewing concession in the hands of Franz Kaltwasser is proven. He will also have been the host of the Gasthof Zur Schwane. In 1868 the inn was sold and Mr. JL Sartorius became the new owner.

On October 7, 1872 the concession and the inn again changed hands. Georg Goeb from Theilheim became the new Schwanenwirt. But already in 1887 another owner of the inn was proven. Georg Christen had to file for bankruptcy at this point . His successor was the Gerolzhöfer Michael Stephan, who bought the building on January 18, 1887. At that time the passage between Hauptstrasse and Zehentgasse was also called "Schwanengasse".

The Stephan family remained in possession of the inn well into the 20th century. Before 1935 Michael Stephan and his wife Agnes owned the Schwanen. Michael Stephan died on February 6, 1935 and his wife continued to run the business alone. In the same year Agnes sold the inn. The inn also had a cellar . It was on the Gaibacher Steige, the so-called "Brunnstäch" ( vmf. Brunnsteige).

The new owners were Josef Maria Pfaff II and his wife Maria. Pfaff was a winegrower and began growing wine for the first time under the name “Zur Schwane”. The brewery was shut down at this point. The winery came into the hands of Petra and Michael Pfaff as early as 1937. In 1993 the estate received an award and was henceforth part of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries . In 1997 Eva Pfaff-Düker and Ralph Düker followed as the new owners of the winery.

architecture

The building presents itself as a two-storey eaves side house . The upper floor has plastered half-timbering . The building was extensively renovated in the 18th century. A quarry stone cellar, which is still preserved today and is spanned by a barrel vault, extends below the house . In the inner courtyard, the wooden arbor that originally existed here has recently been reconstructed. The building is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .
