Gatesville is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Coryell County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the junction of US Highway 84 and Highway 36, about 125 km north of Austin , near the center of the county, west of the geographic center of Texas and has a total area of 22.5 km² without significant water surface.
history
The place was founded in 1854, shortly after the formation of the county, and named after the nearby Fort Gates .

According to the 2000 census, 15,591 people lived here in 2,640 households and 1,752 families. The population density was 692.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 63.20% White, 27.00% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 8.49% other ethnic groups. About 0.56% were mixed race and 14.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,640 households, 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.2% of these were married couples living together. 13.3% were single mothers and 33.6% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
11.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.3% 18 to 24, 53.9% 25 to 44, 16.3% 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females of all age groups there were 63.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 59.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,534 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,543. Males had a median income of $ 30,625 versus $ 17,073 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,152. 14.3% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.7% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.9% were 65 or older.
