Boykin , also known as Gee's Bend , is a census-designated place in Wilcox County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

geography

Boykin is located in central Alabama in the southern United States. It is located directly on the Alabama River , which later forms the Mobile River with the Tombigbee River and flows into Mobile Bay and finally the Gulf of Mexico in southern Alabama .

Nearby locations include Camden (3 miles south), Catherine (12 miles northwest), and Pine Hill (25 miles southwest). The next larger city with 205,000 inhabitants is the capital of Alabama, Montgomery, about 87 kilometers to the northeast .

history

The place is part of the Black Belt in Alabama, a region in which predominantly colored people live. At first there was a plantation owned by Joseph Gee, on which 47 slaves worked. In 1845 the plantation was sold and one of the following owners bought and rented it. In the 1930s the place seemed isolated and deserted, so that people were settled here in the course of the resettlement administration . A school, smaller shops, a sawmill and several houses were built. In 1971 a post office was opened. The name of the place was based on the politician Frank W. Boykin .

Alabama State Route 28 runs 4 kilometers west of the village, and Alabama State Route 41 also runs 7 kilometers southeast . A trunk road is only 44 kilometers west of US Highway 43 .

Camden Municipal Airport is about 9 kilometers south , and Pine Hill Municipal Airport is 28 kilometers southwest .

Demographics

The 2010 census showed a population of 275, divided between 100 households and 69 families. The population density was 40 people per square kilometer. 95.3% of the population were black and 4% white. 0.7% were of any other ethnicity , 0.7% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. The average age was 40 years.
