The memorial for the fallen in 1866 is a war memorial in the Bavarian town of Hausen , a district of the health resort Bad Kissingen in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen . The monument is one of the Bad Kissingen architectural monuments and is registered in the Bavarian list of monuments under the number D-6-72-114-193 .

The memorial was created by the sculptor Michael Arnold in honor of the royal Bavarian officer Eduard Schlagintweit and the Prussian lieutenants Carl Richard Lindner and Robert Delius, who died in Hausen during the Battle of Kissingen as part of the German War of 1866 and at the behest of the Prussian Colonel von der Goltz were buried on the site of the current facility.

history

The facility was built in 1867 on the Lower Saline . A cross was erected at the site of the mass grave. The complex also consists of the Schlagintweit monument with a portrait of the Bavarian officer Eduard Schlagintweit and the Delius column with a caterpillar helmet.

Schlagintweit Monument

Schlagintweit was killed when he was supposed to get reinforcements and on the way back he and his horse were hit by Prussian bullets near the Upper Saline . The monument for Schlagintweit was commissioned by his brother Adolf Schlagintweit . The dedication text written in Latin on the back of the Schlagintweit monument reports that Schlagintweit fell shortly after participating in the Spanish-Moroccan War in the battle of Kissingen and followed his brother Adolf Schlagintweit to his death in the Chinese city of Kashgar in 1857 had died. The dedication text names Edward's brother Hermann von Schlagintweit-Sakünlünski as the founder of the monument.

Even before the tomb was erected, the Bavarian King Ludwig II visited the grave of Captain Schlagintweit when he was touring the battle zones despite a cold and heavy snowstorms.

Delius monument

When manufacturer Daniel Delius from Bradford ( West Yorkshire ), father or brother of the fallen lieutenant, heard about the construction of the facility, he gave Arnold the Delius column in honor of Arnold for 8 pounds (based on today's purchasing power around 2,500 euros) Commissioned by Robert Delius. In a letter dated March 17, 1868, Delius reported to the district administrator about his order for the memorial and documented with the attached sketch how he envisioned the finished system.

The execution of the monument largely corresponds to Arnold's design. The only thing missing (possibly for cost reasons) was the Bavarian caterpillar helmet on the Delius column; there is also a possibility that the helmet was stolen. Arnold's design is preserved in the Bad Kissingen city archive together with the artist's estate .

Condition of the entire facility

In the “Guide to the warrior graves and war marks from the German Brotherhood of 1866 in and around Bad Kissingen” published by TA Schachenmayer- Verlag in 1935, author E. Merz goes into detail about the circumstances under which Delius and Schlaginweit fell and describes the grave complex for that Year 1935 as maintained. The Nüdlinger Volkmar Csallner however, who brought out a new edition of the grave leader in 1987, referred to the system as totally neglected. This was a consequence of the legal situation after 1868, as ownership of the facility was divided between the state (spa administration) and the Delius and Schlaginweit families. The descendants of the Delius family registered with the land registry could not be reached by post. As part of the land consolidation, Otto Funck, chairman of the land consolidation authority, arranged for the ownership shares in the grave to be merged, so that responsibility for the entire complex went to the state spa nursery . This renovated the weathered tombs and re-poured the iron fence; Furthermore, the missing caterpillar helmet was replaced by a Greek hoplite helmet.
