Eduard Schlagintweit (born March 23, 1831 in Munich , † July 10, 1866 in Hausen ) was a Bavarian officer , scientist and author .

Life

He was the son of the doctor Joseph Schlagintweit (1791-1854) and Rosalie Seidel (1805-1839) and the third of the five Schlagintweit brothers , who were all scientists and explorers. Eduard climbed the Alps twice with Hermann and Adolph during his time as a pupil of the Cadet Corps in 1846 and 1847 . On these trips he gained experience for his later observations in Morocco.

After his training in the cadet corps, Schlagintweit joined the Bavarian Army and was from 1849 first as a sub-lieutenant , later as a lieutenant in the 6th Chevauleger Regiment . Ten years later, with the permission of the Bavarian King, he took part in the Spanish-Moroccan War of 1859/60 at the headquarters of Commander-in-Chief Leopoldo O'Donnell as a first lieutenant , “to collect geographical and ethographic notes at the same time” . For his services he was awarded the Spanish Order of Ferdinand and the Medalla de la Campaña de Africa . In Morocco, he made plaster masks of residents' heads, took measurements and took photos. He took all the documents with him to Germany for further studies.

Schlagintweit later went to England and France , where he wrote his frequently cited work The Spanish-Moroccan War in 1859 and 1860 .

Schlagintweit fell in the German war as a captain in the quartermaster staff and adjutant to the commandant general and lieutenant general Oskar Freiherr von Zoller (1809–1866) in the battle of Kissingen . He was buried on the spot together with four likewise fallen soldiers of the 5th Jäger Battalion in what is today the memorial for the fallen for 1866 opposite the Upper Saline in Hausen (today part of Bad Kissingen ). On November 28, 1866, four months later, King Ludwig II had Captain Schlagintweit's grave shown to him during a visit to Kissingen, despite heavy snowstorms.

Schlagintweit was a member of several learned societies.
