The Gegenblütige gladiolus ( Gladiolus oppositiflorus ) is a plant of the genus gladiolus ( Gladiolus ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae). It is one of the parent species of the garden gladiolus ( Gladiolus × hortulanus ).
features
The counter-flowered gladiolus is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 80 to 150 centimeters. As a survival organ, this geophyte forms tubers , but not subterranean runners. The stem is sometimes branched. The leaves are simple and have parallel veins. The leaf margin is smooth.
The hermaphrodite flower is threefold. The bracts are white or pink with darker spots in the throat and darker central veins. The perigone tips are pointed or pointed and the uppermost one is not or only weakly helmet-shaped.
The flowering period extends from July to September. There are fruit capsules formed.
Systematics
One can distinguish between two subspecies:
- Gladiolus oppositiflorus subsp. oppositiflorus : It occurs in South Africa in the eastern Cape region.
- Gladiolus oppositiflorus subsp. salmoneus (Baker) Oberm. (Syn .: Gladiolus salmoneus Baker ): It occurs from the Cape region to KwaZulu-Natal.

The counter-flowered gladiolus is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
