Violin making school (training)
A violin making school is a technical educational institution that enables training to become a violin maker.
Apprenticeship as a violin maker
Since the reform of the Crafts Code in 2004, the profession of violin maker in Germany has been a non-licensed craft and can be practiced without a journeyman or master craftsman's certificate. In Austria , the production of stringed instruments is still a trade that requires a master craftsman's examination and a trade license. In all other European countries, the profession of violin maker can be practiced freely and without additional tests.
The multi-year training as a violin maker is traditionally completed as an apprenticeship in a company or in a violin making school. The apprenticeship concludes with the journeyman's examination. After several years of professional experience, the master violin maker examination can be completed.
Germany
In general, there is the possibility of completing a 3-year dual training with an independent master violin maker. Prerequisites for this training are on the one hand secondary school leaving certificate and on the other hand creativity, musicality and manual dexterity. In addition, there are two state educational institutions where training is free of charge:
- Vocational and vocational school “Vogtland Musical Instrument Making” in Klingenthal
- State vocational school for musical instrument making, state vocational school in Mittenwald
The training lasts 3 years (36 months) and ends with the acquisition of the journeyman's certificate . The master craftsman's certificate can then be acquired, for which a corresponding master’s examination must be taken. This is currently possible at the Chamber of Crafts in Chemnitz.
There is also a musical instrument making course specializing in string instrument making at the West Saxon University of Zwickau .
