The yellow beet mosaic virus (also turnip yellow mosaic virus , English Turnip yellow mosaic virus , TYMV) is a plant virus (type species) of the genus tymovirus from the family of viruses Tymoviridae . It mainly affects the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae) and causes a bright mosaic disease in which the leaves wither and the leaf veins stand out clearly.

biology

The virus particles (virions) are isometric and have no envelope. They have a diameter of 28 nm and are rounded in profile. They consist of 37 percent nucleic acids and 63% proteins . The genome consists of single-stranded RNA and is linear. The total genome has a size of 6,319  kb .

The yellow beet mosaic virus requires a vector , i.e. a transmitting organism , for transmission and infection . In this case, plant pathogenic insects like to play flea beetles belonging Phyllotreta - and Psylloides species, Kohlschotenrüssler ( Ceutorhynchus assimilis ) and some more beetle species involved.

Occurrence

The virus is spread across Eurasia and Australia. The virus was identified by Markham and Smith (1949) when infected with Chinese cabbage ( Brassica rapa ssp. Pekinensis ). The natural host spectrum also includes a number of other Brassica species, including most of the cabbage varieties cultivated as food and oil crops. Other Brassicaceae such as the Krambe ( Crambe abyssinica ) or foam herbs ( Cardamine ) are also attacked.

Another species that attacks Brassica and other cruciferous plants and is known by the similar name Turnip yellows virus (TuYV) in English is the water beet yellowing virus , also known as beet yellowing virus .
