The Protestant community center Nathan-Söderblom-Haus , built in 1959 based on a design by the architect Günter Kohlhaus, is located at Mariendorfer Damm 342 at the corner of Säntisstraße in the Mariendorf district of Berlin's Tempelhof-Schöneberg district .

history

The Protestant church Mariendorf-Süd in 1961 by the community of the village church Mariendorf separated. The community center with Nathan Söderblom as its namesake was inaugurated on October 3, 1959. Initially, only a building complex with a community hall was built, which was used as a church service room. Originally a church was also planned. However, since there was no need for another church room later, it was not built. In a second construction phase in 1966, the same architect built a community center, spatially separated from it, which at that time housed a daycare center. Today it contains the rectory and apartments.

Building description

The in plan shaped U-complex consists of the separate section of the building a flat-roofed hall church and an L-shaped attachment , the spaces for the instruction of the confirmation , a youth room , the municipal office and apartment includes. The longitudinal walls of the hall church are externally structured by supporting structures. They are closed in the lower area, above they are optically accentuated by a high ribbon of windows made of colored glass mosaic . The end walls are faced with bricks . A pergola connects the extension with the bell tower. The entrance to the church hall is located between the two wall panels of the bell tower made of exposed concrete . They reach at one corner of the nave up to the height of its flat roof. On top of them stands an open bell chamber made of trapezoidal wall panels, covered with a gable roof , also made of exposed concrete. There hangs a bronze bell that was cast in 1961 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock . It has a height of 79 cm, a diameter of 98 cm and a crown of 15 cm. Their strike tone is G sharp '.
