Just as different as me (original title Same Kind of Different as Me ) is a film drama by Michael Carney , which was released in US cinemas on October 20, 2017 and in German cinemas on November 30, 2017. Based on a book by Ron Hall , Denver Moore, and Lynn Vincent , the film explores the true facts of Hall and Moore's acquaintance and the story of their friendship.

Denver Moore grew up in Louisiana. After the death of his grandmother, he works on a farm that his uncle has leased, but after years of hard work, he escapes from the farm. When he arrived in town, he desperately tried to ambush a bus driver and was caught by the police. After several years in prison, he becomes homeless and ends up on the street. His life changes in 1998 when he meets Ron Hall in a homeless shelter. The international art dealer befriends Moore in order to save his marriage to his wife Deborah. His wife's dreams mean that all three embark on the journey of a lifetime.
Biographical background
The film is based on Ron Hall and Denver Moore's 2006 book Same Kind of Different as Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together , in which they describe their acquaintance. Hall was an MBA graduate from Texas Christian University at the time they met and an international art dealer whose long list of regulars included many celebrated personalities. The African American Moore was unemployed and homeless as early as 1960, spent ten years in Angola Prison and, after his release, was homeless in Fort Worth for another 22 years.
He got to know Hall when he and Deborah helped out in the Union Gospel Mission in Fort Worth for a few weeks. Denver Moore was a volunteer there to the end and died on March 31, 2012 at the age of 75.

Directed by Michael Carney , who, together with Alexander Foard and Ron Hall, also took on the script adaptation of the book that served as the basis for the film.
Greg Kinnear took on the role of Ron Hall, who was also involved in the literary template for the film as a writer.
The film was shot in Jackson , Mississippi, in late 2014 . The film music was composed by John Paesano . The soundtrack to the film includes 27 pieces of music and was released by Sony Music on October 20, 2017.
A first trailer for the film was released in August 2016, which Stuart Heritage describes as "the worst, most intrusive [trailer] of the year".
The film was originally supposed to be distributed by Paramount, but Pure Flix took over the distribution and brought the film to US cinemas on October 20, 2017. The film was released in German cinemas on November 30, 2017.

Age rating
In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The Christian story about prejudice, forgiveness and reconciliation focuses on the sensitively drawn figures. Individual violent scenes can irritate preschoolers, while 6-year-olds can put these aspects into context and understand them. The harmonious resolution of conflicts and the clear moral stance of the film offer them enough support so that they can process it without being overwhelmed. "
Reviews
Birgit Roschy from epd Film sums up in her criticism that in the film the important question of what humanity means is largely stifled in the kitsch of the musky music and symbolic landscapes and, last but not least, in the annoying little girl behavior of Renée Zellweger : “In the end, the impression remains a good one History that too many edges were sanded off in the film adaptation. "
Honors
On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the song Stubborn Angel from the film was in a shortlist of 70 songs from which the nominations in the category Best Movie Song at the 2018 Academy Awards will be determined . On the same day, the Academy announced that John Paesano's work was on a shortlist from which the nominations for the Best Film Music category would come.
