Gene Watts

Eugene "Gene" Watts (born February 22, 1936 in Warrensburg , Missouri , United States ) is an American trombonist . He was a founding member of the Canadian Brass quintet .

Life

Watts grew up in Sedalia and initially played the trombone in jazz . He studied at the University of Missouri School of Music in Columbia , where he received his Bachelor of Music in 1959 . He financed his studies through the "Missouri Mudcats Dixieland Band" which he founded . This was followed by a time at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and at the Tanglewood Music Center.

After playing in several US symphony orchestras ( North Carolina , San Antonio and Milwaukee ), Seiji Ozawa brought him to Canada as solo trombonist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . There he met tuba player Chuck Daellenbach , with whom he founded the brass quintet Canadian Brass in 1970 , of which he was a member until 2010.

Gene Watts is married to filmmaker Barbara Sweete and lives in Toronto . He is interested in meditation .

He received honorary doctorates from the University of Missouri (2002) and the New England Conservatory.
