Genista Mary "Jenny" McIntosh, Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall (born Tandy , * 23. September 1946 in London ) is a British theater agent, theater director and politician of the Labor Party .

Life

She was born as Genista Mary Tandy to Geoffrey Tandy and his wife Maire. She grew up in Hertfordshire . She attended the Hemel Hempstead Grammar School in Hemel Hempstead . She graduated from the University of York ; there she graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and sociology .

After graduating and getting married, McIntosh held various positions at the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1972 . From 1972 to 1977 she worked there as a casting agent , from 1977 to 1984 as planning controller, from 1986 to 1990 as administrative director ( senior administrator ) and in 1990 as producer ( associate producer ). Since 1977 McIntosh worked as an agent for the theater and artist agency Marmont Management Ltd in London; there she was also director from 1984 to 1986. Her tasks there included in particular the search for writers , directors , costume and set designers for theater productions.

From 1990 to 1996 she was Executive Director of the Royal National Theater . In 1997 she was appointed Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden , London. She gave up this position in May 1997 after only five months in office "for health reasons". From 1997 to 2003 she was then again director of the Royal National Theater. In 2002/2003 she was principal of the Guildhall School of Music .

In July 2008 McIntosh published the so-called McIntosh Report , a critical study of the work, eligibility criteria and awarding practices of the Arts Council England (ACE). McIntosh particularly criticized the lack of cooperation between regional arts councils and the national organization, the lack of cooperation between the ACE and artists and partner organizations, the sometimes restrictive subsidy practice and the lack of transparency in decisions.

Membership in the House of Lords

On August 3, 1999, she was made a Life Peer . It bears the title Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall , of Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden . On November 22, 1999, she gave her inaugural address at the House of Lords .

In the House of Lords, she has been Deputy Chairman of Committees since 2007 and Deputy Speaker since 2008 .

McIntosh's political interests include the arts , education , health care, and environmentally friendly transportation . In her speech in the House of Lords debate on education policy on May 17, 2011, McIntosh opposed a one-sided focus of the curriculum on the subjects of the British Baccalaureate , pointing out that “employers are not only looking for excellent graduates, but holistic and comprehensively educated young people. "

Offices and honors

McIntosh is a trustee ( trustee ) of the Theaters Trust and the South Bank Symphony . She is a director of the Roundhouse Trust and the National Opera Studio . She is a member of the Council of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art .

McIntosh has several honorary doctorates . She is an honorary doctor from the University of York (Hon DUniv 1998), Middlesex University (Hon DUniv 2002) and City University London (Hon DUniv 2002). She is an Honorary Fellow of the Goldsmiths College of the University of London (2003) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

Private

She married Neil Scott Wishart McIntosh in 1971. The marriage had two children, a son and a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce in 1988. McIntosh lived in North London with their children after the divorce. McIntosh hobbies include music and gardening .
