Georg Benedikt Winer (also: Johann Georg Benedict Wiener ; born April 13, 1789 in Leipzig ; † May 12, 1858 ibid) was a German Protestant theologian (New Testament scholar).

Life

Johann Georg Benedict Wiener was born as the only child of the citizen and white baker Johann George Wiener and his wife Magdalene Hahn, the eldest daughter of the citizen and hat maker Johann Gottfried Hahn, in the Leipziger Burgstraße 23. After he was baptized on April 17th of the year of his birth in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig , he lost his parents at an early age. An aunt who took care of the upbringing of the toddler soon passed away. Viennese found themselves in very poor circumstances, but these circumstances were relativized by patronizing friends of the family. On June 27, 1801 he was admitted to the Nikolaischule school similar to a grammar school in his hometown, which was under the direction of the rector Gottlieb Samuel Forbiger . As a very good, eager to learn and hardworking student, developed a preference for oriental languages. He left the educational institution with distinction at Easter 1809 in order to enroll at the University of Leipzig on April 14 of the same year .

In addition to Johann August Heinrich Tittmann , Johann Georg Rosenmüller , Karl August Gottlieb Keil and Heinrich Gottlieb Tzschirner , he especially heard the philologist Gottfried Hermann and the orientalist Ernst Friedrich Karl Rosenmüller , who shaped him in his academic career. Guided in this way, he obtained the doctoral hat of philosophy on December 17, 1817 with the work De verssionis pentateuchi samaritanae indole and then completed his habilitation on the philosophical chair. After he had long since headed an exegetical society. In 1819 he became curator at the university library and associate professor at the theological faculty of Leipzig University . On November 5, 1819 he received his doctorate with the thesis Orationem muneris adeundi causa for a doctorate in theology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . On November 12, 1819, Winer also received an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of Rostock University . In 1823 he went to the University of Erlangen as the successor to Leonhard Berthold (1774-1822) as the fourth full professor for New Testament exegesis and oriental languages . Here he was in the academy years 1824/25, 1829/30 dean of the theological faculty, led the fortunes of the university as prorector in 1828/29 and became royal Bavarian church councilor on May 2, 1826. On May 6, 1824, in Erlangen, he married Adeline Ritter, Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's foster daughter , who was happy but had no children.

After declining a call to the University of Jena in 1826 , he returned to Leipzig in 1832 as successor to the theological professorship of the New Testament. Here he saw the opportunity to develop further in the existing environment and, when he took over the second theological professorship, on May 5, 1845, he also became canon of the Meissen Monastery . Winer was from 1824 to 1830 co-editor of the New Critical Journal of Theological Literature, 1826 to 1832 co-editor of the journal for scientific theology . Together with Moritz Wilhelm Drobisch , Gustav Theodor Fechner , Justus Wilhelm Martin Radius and Wilhelm Wachsmuth , he took over the editorial support of the Leipzig literary newspaper in 1833 . Winer also took on organizational tasks at the Leipzig University, was dean of the theological faculty in 1852/53 and directed the fortunes of the university as rector in 1841/42 . In the last years of his life he suffered from a nervous eye disease, which prevented him in many cases from work. Despite a stroke, he continued his lectures in the winter of 1857/58. The evil repeated itself in the spring, from which he died on May 12, 1858 at the age of 69.
