Georg Gessler (2008)

Georg Gessler (born March 6, 1924 in Zurich ; † April 11, 2012 in Ottenbach ) ( called GeGe ) was a Swiss painter . His artistic work moved in a synthesis of Fauvism , Expressionism , Orphism and Cubism .

Life

After finishing school, Georg Gessler took up a part-time position as an assistant to Röbi Furrer at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. Until 1943 he also worked as an intern in the architecture department at the ETH and made nude studies for Professor Gisler. This was followed by training as a set designer . Until 1954 he worked at various theaters, among others he was chief assistant to Teo Otto and employee of Caspar Neher .

Georg Gessler decided to go into business for himself. In 1958 he and his family moved to a grotto in Maggia , Ticino . In 1970 he moved into his studio in Ottenbach. He kept going on shorter and longer trips in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In the last few years he often traveled to the south of France, shortly before his death he visited Tenerife .

In the volume of poetry The Defense of the Butterflies by Gunther Tietz , published in 1981 , Georg Gessler provided etchings from the cycle Downfall and New Creation .

GeGe stopped painting in 2003. He was no longer able to meet the inherent qualitative criteria of his large works, precisely painted in several layers. He rubbed the colors himself according to his own recipes. His role models were the medieval artists, whose colors have remained unchanged for centuries. The artist died on April 12, 2012 in his home in Ottenbach.
