Georg Gotthart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Gotthart (also Gotthard ; * 1552 ?; †  March 23, 1619 in Solothurn ) was an iron merchant and poet ; he wrote three games (the spellings Gotthard and Gotthardt can also be found here and there, but Gotthart's works are all headed with "Georg Gotthart").

Life

Georg Gotthart took the citizenship oath in Solothurn in 1571 ; For the year of birth 1552, which is still mentioned in the older specialist literature, no further evidence could be provided. He worked as a «Jsenkraemer» (metal trader) and wrote three games without any academic training or knowledge of Latin , which were performed at great expense in Solothurn. The games are preserved as prints from that period. Georg Gotthart died on March 23, 1619. Gotthart's son is the theologian Johann Wilhelm Gotthard (also Johannes Wilhelm Gotthart ; 1592–1649).

German studies in the 19th century (and beyond) mostly took note of Gotthart's games in a disparaging manner; Jakob Baechtold , for example, wrote in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie: “The last two pieces, which required two days to be performed, are among the most extensive of the time. They are consistently without a plot, boring, blandly moralizing (...). "

Such judgments do not do justice to Gotthart's performance and his game texts. A special meaning of the games lies in the fact that they were the last publicly performed major citizen games in Solothurn; Before that, games had been held that were mainly oriented towards spiritual themes (e.g. the games by Hanns Wagner alias 'Ioannes Carpentarius'), after Gotthart came the time of the Jesuit and school drama.
