Georg Heinrich Orth (born February 17, 1698 in Heilbronn ; † January 2, 1769 ) was Mayor of Heilbronn from 1754 to 1769 .

Life

Georg Heinrich Orth comes from the Langenselbold branch of the Orth family, who originally came from Langenselbold near Hanau and immigrated to Heilbronn via Frankfurt am Main in 1533 . The coat of arms of the Langenselbold branch of the Orth family depicts a golden lion jumping up and holding an arrow. The son of the mayor Johann Heinrich Orth (1653-1733) and the pastor's daughter Maria Barbara Sommerhard (1672-1738) attended the Heilbronn high school and enrolled on April 29, 1716 at the University of Jena for law , where he graduated with a licentiate . Back in Heilbronn, he settled down as a lawyer and legal counsel and was appointed to the city's small council on July 13, 1731. On August 18, 1739 he became tax master . After the death of the mayor Johann Ludwig Kübel in 1753, he became the third mayor and, associated with this, also Vogt of the imperial town of Böckingen . After the death of Johannes Schübler, he moved to the second post of mayor in 1757. After Esaias Meyer resigned from office in 1765 for reasons of age, Orth succeeded him as first mayor. He died after a brief serious illness in January 1769 and was buried in the cemetery on Weinsberger Strasse . Before his death, he had prepared a text that would be read at his grave instead of a sermon. The pastor noted that he was "worthy of his offices".

He was married to Dorothea Catharina Maria Andler, daughter of the businessman Levin Friedrich Andler, and had eight children with her. The son Heinrich Karl Philibert Orth (1733–1795) later also became mayor of Heilbronn. Another son Eberhard Raimund Orth (1738–1800) became a pastor. Daughter Sofia Dorothea Orth (1734–1805) married Johann Rudolf Schlegel , who was rector of the Heilbronn grammar school from 1760 to 1790, another daughter Magdalena Regina Sidonie (1746–1816) married into the Heilbronn councilor family Feyerabend.
